May 9th, 2010 “Frozen Creek” cover

We’ve been heavily spinning the new Circa Survive album Blue Sky Noise lately (and really, who hasn’t?). Check out our cover of “Frozen Creek”!

April 18th, 2010 Eyes Wide Open

We haven’t posted in a while, so I feel like it’s a good time to update any and all of you who frequent our page on our current agenda and that of the near future. We’ve been playing out as frequently as possible in and around Boston, with a few interspersed shows in NJ and some coming up in NH. We’re so excited to be venturing around sharing our sound with people, and the response we have received has been really inspiring. I’ve never really known what it is to have legitimate fans. Sure, I’ve encountered my fair share of admirers…but not for the music…more for superficial reasons, be it physical attraction, a desire to be involved with something in the music scene…I’m not really sure of all the reasons, but what I do know is that now we’re beginning to stumble upon unfamiliar scenery…people who finally connect with our music and aren’t too introverted to speak with us about it. We may not sell out shows…not yet, at least. But, we have consistently found ourselves speaking in depth with people after shows about our live set and it’s so incredible to meet new people and share an interest in both music and the concepts we attempt to convey. So, to anyone and everyone that I have had the pleasure and blessing to meet and speak with, thank you incredibly for your company and feedback. It falls on grateful and open ears.

We, as a band, have agreed to move home to New Jersey at the end of June, after Kyle and I graduate. It’s a bit of a bittersweet thing. I am excited to move home. I’m ready to leave the scenery of the city for something more quaint…more reclusive. I’m not sure exactly what everyone’s opinions are on the move, but it certainly will aid us in touring more rigorously over the summer and following seasons! I’m sad to leave the family that I’ve been accepted into at my work, and to leave my recently acquired friends, but I think that heading back to New Jersey will be the start of a new phase for us – something great.

We have been working on a lot of new material – all of which I am entirely ecstatic to get to work on with the boys and eventually record and share with you.  We’re still trying to map it all out and build something to our liking and standards, but there are more than 30 tracks in the making and it’s a bit overwhelming at the moment, in a great way.

If you haven’t seen, our good friend, Alex Laferriere, recorded our live show at Harper’s Ferry, and the footage came out awesome. Check it out here.

We have some really cool photo shoots coming up that I will be shooting myself – some cool concepts that I’m excited to experiment with and I hope you will all find unique and cohesive with our design.

Kyle and I are working on an upstart. A Visual Design Firm, TheTideWillTurn, and will be offering a variety of services to up and coming artists. I’ll be shooting hi-res digital photography for artists looking to augment their visual appearance and presentation for album artwork, press-photos, web design – anything you could use imaging for. Kyle has been working pretty hard with some clients as a Web-Designer and his portfolio is pretty ballin. If you weren’t aware, Kyle is responsible for the design and maintenance of TheTideWillTurn.com We are also going to be offering services in the fields of Booking, Promotion and Publishing. For those of you unaware, we already run a company, Swallow The Earth, Publishing. It is our hope that we will be able to use our skills and experience to aid other bands and artists who are seeking to elevate themselves from the mob of today’s scene. If you or anyone you know is in need of any of these services, contact us through here. We can be reached easily via TAOA@TheTideWillTurn.com or individually via Kevin@TheTideWillTurn.com / Kyle@TheTideWillTurn.com Don’t hesitate to get a hold of us with a concept or design you already have perfected, or to discuss a project you’d like to propose. We are really easy to work with and will do anything and everything we can to make your project meet your expectations and your budget. After all, it’s your project, and far too frequently in our industry, designers are taking too many liberties and unprofessionally looking condescendingly on bands and artists. We realize that you take pride in who you are and what you do, and every aspect of your repertoire should convey that. We’re here for you.

February 16th, 2010 Album sale — $6.99 at SmartPunk!

Big news, folks: if you’ve to get your hands on our debut album, A Gentleman’s Agreement (geeeez, what’s wrong with you?), a limited-time sale at SmartPunk.com will give it to you for only $6.99! Wowee!

We did a mock purchase earlier, and with first-class USPS shipping to MA, the total was only $10.80 — cheaper than if you bought it from our Big Cartel! While buying the album at a show is still the best way (price-wise, and hey, we get to meet ya!), this is definitely a sale worth taking up!

February 9th, 2010 This has my utmost admiration

I have to initially thank Austin for introducing me to this, but give Riley Breckenridge of Thrice fame mad props for promoting this fellow, Jack Conte.

I don’t know what I love most: the cutting-edge way he’s releasing/promoting his music, the beautiful intricacies of the songs themselves (which strikes a special Radiohead-esque chord with me), or the jack-of-all-trades methodology to it all. Also: goddamn do I want to have a workspace like that.

January 7th, 2009 Annnnnd, we’re back!

Apologies for the few days of down time, folks — had a bit of server trouble over the holidays, but we’re back in action. Perhaps now would be a good time to formally introduce ourselves, instead of leading you on with cryptic (and often silly) sound bites and video clips.

We are The Art of Attraction, a band of four members and friends — Kevin Colquhoun, Kyle Sutton, Austin Gabrielli and Chris Johnson — formerly of New Jersey but now based full-time in Boston. For the last two years, we’ve been hard at work on our debut album, A Gentleman’s Agreement, which has seen its way from early conception to its near completion now in 2009. As the weeks go on and we continue adding the final touches to our baby, we’ll keep you updated the best way we know how. Song teasers. Spoof videos. And the occasional poignant entry. We hope you’ll play along.

And with that, here’s a rare and insightful look into the arduous process of recording yells:

And now you know.

November 20th, 2008 Aurora

I walked through the city last night. It was that moment when it first gets dark and it seems like the sky is barren and black. Funny, how the beginning of the night is it’s darkest. When the sun’s glory submerges beyond the horizon and we’re graced with euphoric paintings in the sky before it suddenly fades to a solemn black and the distant stars are not yet visible. I had my iPod on and was listening to what I call City Walking Music…songs that seem to transcend me from the bustling streets where I am essentially no one in particular in a sea of faces to a place where I am a sole traveler, and a story takes place to aural imaging from my perspective and my perspective only. I stopped walking and did a slow spin, devouring the surrounding scene. The buildings, the few streetlights in the distance, the trees. It’s crazy that every day we walk the same routes, we see the same sights, but how infrequently we take the time to really perceive them. Buildings…such pieces of artwork. People built these things. At one point, they were not there, and slowly, they were constructed. Trees, flowers, plants…grew from the ground. Such masterpieces. We don’t appreciate these things as often as we should, and that’s frustrating. We all get caught up in the ceaseless moving…like gears, turning. cogs on a wheel, meeting each other only briefly in the cycle of an engine…our world, until we part, to meet only when our faces match up again. But when the smallest stone is placed in one spur of our machine, the entire engine grinds to a halt. We still haven’t figured out how to cope with some things. Stones will always plague our motion. We’ll keep carving at ourselves to become leaner, stronger, more effective cogs, capable of withstanding the forces of friction. We’ll become weathered and worn, but we will continue, onward marching, forward.

I breathed out. Watched the breath escape my pursed lips, and for a moment, the blistering cold became a warming sensation over my body. I watched as the vapor lingered in the air, physical evidence of my being…my sustenance. I am alive. This is a momentary glimpse of my life, hovering before me. And in a second, that breath dissipated into the air, it became invisible. But i imagined that the bonds within that breath were strong…strong like I consider myself. That every molecule was a miniscule me, refusing to let go of the others. Not out of fear or dependence, but out of dedication and selflessness.

My mind wandered on a tangent to situations of life and death. There are so many people in my life that I love. Some know it more than others, but I think that what drives me every day to live and laugh and love and learn is this unearthly passion for those around me. I, like that breath, will never let go. I would rather die than allow someone else to feel pain, to scar, to pass. I fear that this trait, though burning within me, is of a dying breed. The thought pours fuel on the flame inside me. I picture that breath traveling, together, embraced in a death grip, refusing to release. I imagine it still floating in the atmosphere, occasionally careening into people. I hope that somehow, the essence of that breath gets swallowed. I hope it breeds in their lungs and people can learn to nurture new feelings of faith and love, and to dislocate their selfishness. The walls that society has taught us that we need to build around ourselves for protection and security are images of false pretense. They do not shelter us in the ways we would like, but, in fact, they block our vision of that which lays upon the horizon. We are human. We are all the same. When can we agree to let fall these arms we bear. Let’s walk together, tall, arms in arms. Embraced. Never let go.

I breathed again and nodded my head. This album is nearing completion and with each and every day, I feel it growing in strength, in depth and above all, in passion. This child that was conceived by this band is almost of age. It will be a force to be reckoned with. A fury, a fire, burns within. Let us be the fuel for your fire. Let us burn inside your chest. I will tear my throat open so you can see the flicker of the flame, and with it gaping, I will do my best to sing for you. We will be your anthem.

Devour.
